Cosby sounds fired up on this live one. “Kindergarten” kicks off the disc in fine fashion with the soon-to-be TV star’s spot-on and kid-centered description of early grammar school. Cosby accurately captures the strangeness of a time when a lot of things don’t quite make sense and you are constantly being told what to do. “Personal Hygiene” and “Shop” take us through junior high before we arrive a…

Necessity, as the saying goes, is the mother of invention, and at no point has a cliché been so prescient as in the 1930s. During that era, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal took documentation to new heights in U.S. history, turning artists and artisans into government-sponsored vehicles for reportage and representation of both American ideals and the harsher set of realities citizens were dea…

The Brady Bunch
Have you noticed how Peter Brady Bunch in the crowd wore T-shirts of the same?

Peter, and most of the other children wore the same few shirts. I remember Peter wearing this same yellow T-shirt. Has any ever noticed this before?

Yes, that was the Brady Bunch in the seventies, more realistic than TV Clothing was shot. Today on TV shows you never see a character wearing the same thing twice. You wear a new shirt or dress and then it goes back and never seen again. But this is not a realistic representation of the majority of real people. Most people have a limited wardrobe and have to wear the same things over and over again. Then TV shows were more in touch with reality in this way. Each character has a limited wardrobe to choose from, and they wore the same things often.

The Brady Bunch Movie [VHS]

The big-screen version of the hugely popular 1970s television sitcom takes an original angle: instead of simply re-creating the old series, the film spoofs it by presenting the merged family as blithely unaware that fashions and customs have changed in the ’90s. Shelley Long and Gary Cole are hilarious as the ultra-square yet libidinous Mr. and Mrs. Brady, Christopher Daniel Barnes is an ideal Gre…

A Very Brady Sequel [VHS]

This second ironic send-up of the old Sherwood Schwartz sitcom is even funnier than The Brady Bunch Movie. Shelley Long and Gary Cole return as the married heads of the merged family known as the Bradys, and Christopher Daniel Barnes and Christine Taylor reprise their roles as eldest stepsiblings Greg and Marcia. As with the first film, the clever premise finds the Brady clan caught in a kind of ‘…
